HISTORY

Evidently, there exist conflicting theories concerning the origin of Madrid. While many believe that the Romans founded it, a large number of historians concur that it was the Muslims who first gave this area an urban status. Alfonso VI of Castile converted this city to Christianity in 1085, and in 1561 it became home to the royal court by Felipe II's decree. In the following centuries Madrid became a squalid city, with impoverished dwellers living in dilapidated housing in contrast to the aristocrat's splendid quarters. Madrid became a hotbed for power struggle between the aristocrats and the bourgeois throughout the 19th century. By 20th century the city was revived and improved through modern electrification and the inauguration of tramlines. After a 36-year of fascist rule by General Franco ended in 1975, Spain has made a transition toward democracy with Madrid preserving its distinction as a rich and colorful capital of the country.
